Older Richmond homes: what to know

Richmond's original neighborhoods include mid-century houses and some much older wood-frame homes. Appliances in older houses bring a few extra considerations:

Dryer and range outlets

Many older homes have 3-prong dryer and range outlets, while newer homes typically have 4-prong. A new appliance needs a cord that matches your outlet. If you're updating the outlet itself or adding a circuit, that's a job for a licensed electrician.

Old gas connectors

Gas ranges and dryers are connected with a flexible connector. Older uncoated brass connectors are a known safety concern, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned about them. If your range or dryer is connected with an old connector, or you're not sure, have a licensed plumber take a look. Never move a gas appliance far enough to kink or strain its connector.

Limited space

Newer Richmond communities

Near the Brazos: flood and storm precautions

Richmond sits on the Brazos River, and heavy rain and tropical storms can bring flooding to parts of Fort Bend County. If floodwater ever reaches your appliances:

• Don't plug in or turn on any appliance that was underwater, even after it looks dry. Mud and moisture in the controls, motors and wiring can cause shocks, shorts or fire.
• Gas appliances with flooded controls or valves should be checked, and often replaced, before use. Follow the manufacturer's guidance.
• Throw out refrigerated food that came into contact with floodwater or went without power too long.
