Appliance Error Codes: What They Mean

Before you look up a code

• Write the code down exactly, including capital and small letters (on LG top-load washers, a small "uE" means the washer is still trying to rebalance the load, while a capital "UE" means it has stopped trying), and note when it appeared: filling, washing, draining, spinning or drying.
• Find the model number. It's on a label inside the door, on the door frame or on the back. The same code can mean different things on different brands, and sometimes on different models from the same brand.
• Safety first. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before you reach inside a filter door or behind the machine. On a gas dryer, don't disconnect or work on the gas line. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.

Washer error codes

• Samsung washer Ub / UE / Ur

  Unbalanced load: the washer can't spin safely because the laundry is off to one side.

• Samsung washer 4C / 4E / nF

  Water supply error: water isn't entering the washer the way it should.

• Samsung washer 5C / 5E / nd

  Drain error: water isn't draining out of the washer fast enough, or at all.

• Samsung washer dC / dE / LO

  Door error: the door or lid isn't detected as closed and locked (dC means unbalanced load on some models).

• LG washer OE

  Water outlet (drain) error: the washer can't drain, or drains very slowly.

• LG washer IE

  Water inlet error: the tub didn't fill to the right level in time.

• LG washer UE / uE / Ub

  Unbalanced load: small uE means it's trying to rebalance; capital UE means it needs your help.

• Whirlpool washer F9 E1

  Long drain time: the front-load washer is unable to drain correctly.

Dryer error codes

• Samsung dryer HC / hE

  Heating error: the dryer is getting too hot, most often from a clogged lint screen or vent.

• LG dryer d80 / d90 / d95

  Flow Sense: the exhaust vent is 75% to 95% blocked (d80 can also mean no gas on gas models).

Refrigerator error codes

• LG, GE & Samsung refrigerator FF / Er FF

  LG: freezer fan error. GE: freezer temperature rising. Samsung O FF: Cooling Off (demo) mode.

• Samsung refrigerator 22E / 21E / 40E / 5E

  Fan errors (fridge, freezer, ice room), usually a fan stopped by ice; 5E is a fridge defrost sensor error.

Dishwasher error codes

• Bosch dishwasher E24 / E25

  Drain errors: E24 is a blocked drain path (filter, hose, disposal plug); E25 is a blocked drain pump or loose pump cover.

• Bosch dishwasher E15

  Leak protection: the safety switch detected water in the base of the dishwasher.

• Samsung dishwasher LC / OC / 4C / 5C

  Water codes: LC leak detected, OC too much water, 4C water supply problem, 5C can't drain.

Why a reset isn't always a fix

Turning an appliance off and back on can clear a code, and sometimes that's all it needs. But if the cause is still there, such as a clogged drain filter, a restricted dryer vent or a fan frozen in ice, the code will come back, and running the machine over and over can make things worse. If the same code keeps returning after the simple checks, it's time for a diagnosis.
