On Samsung washers, 4C, 4E, nF and 1 4C are the not filling error: water isn't entering the washer correctly. Most of the checks are at the water valves and hoses behind the machine, and several are quick to do yourself.

What 4C means on a Samsung washer
Samsung describes 4C, 4E, nF and 1 4C as a not filling error: the washer asked for water and didn't get it the way it expected. The cause is often simple, like a valve that isn't fully open, but it can also be a clogged inlet screen or a failed water inlet valve inside the washer.
A related code, 4C2, 4E2 or nF1, means something different: the water coming in on the cold side is very hot, which happens when the hot and cold hoses are swapped. Samsung says that one doesn't need service; reconnect the hoses hot to hot and cold to cold.
Common causes
- A water valve behind the washer that's closed or only partly open.
- A kinked or bent supply hose, often after the washer was pushed back against the wall.
- The hot water hose not connected. Samsung notes the washer may still call for hot water on cycles labeled Cold.
- Debris caught in the small filter screens where the hoses attach to the washer.
- A drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe, which can siphon water out as it fills.
Safety: unplug the washer before pulling it out from the wall, and turn both water valves off before you disconnect any hose. Keep a towel and bucket handy.
Safe things to try first
- Open both valves fully. Make sure the hot and cold valves behind the washer are completely open, and leave them open while it runs.
- Check the hoses. Hot goes to hot and cold to cold (usually red to red, blue to blue), with no kinks or sharp bends. Samsung advises against "Flood Safe" style hoses.
- Check the drain hose depth. Samsung says it shouldn't go less than 6 inches or more than 8 inches into the drain pipe. Don't remove the screw and holder that keep the drain hose against the back of the washer.
- Reset the power. Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker for 1 minute, then restore power and start a cycle.
- Check the inlet screens (optional). With both valves turned off, disconnect each hose at the washer and look inside the connection. If there's grit or debris on the small filter screens, Samsung says you can carefully remove and clean them. Reconnect snugly and open the valves again.
When to call a technician
If the valves are open, the hoses are fine and the code still comes back, the problem is likely inside the washer, such as the water inlet valve. That needs a technician. Call sooner if you see water leaking at the hose connections or under the washer; turn off the valves until it's checked.
