Whirlpool Washer F9 E1 Error Code

What F9 E1 means on a Whirlpool washer
Whirlpool lists F9 E1 on its front-load washers as a long drain time error. The washer is taking too long to pump the water out. Sometimes nothing is broken: Whirlpool notes that a drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe can let drained water siphon back into the washer.

- A drain hose installed too far into the drainpipe, or taped airtight into it.
- A clogged drain pump filter (on models that have one).
- Clogged drain holes in the door seal (the rubber bellow).

Safe things to try first
- Check how far the hose goes in. Whirlpool says the drain hose should not extend more than 4.5 inches into the drainpipe or laundry tub; the U-shaped hose form that came with the washer sets the right length. The top of the hose should be no higher than 96 inches from the bottom of the washer.
- Don't seal the drainpipe. Remove any tape around the hose. Whirlpool says there must be an air gap between the hose and the pipe so water isn't siphoned out.
- Clean the drain pump filter (some models). Your owner's manual shows where it is on your model and how to drain the water before removing it.
- Clean the door seal. Pull back the folds of the rubber door seal and clear lint or debris from the small drain holes, following the cleaning steps in your manual.
- Check for kinks. Make sure the drain hose isn't pinched behind the washer.

If the hose is set up correctly, the filter and door seal are clean and F9 E1 keeps coming back, the drain pump, its wiring or a blockage deeper in the drain system may be the cause. That needs a technician.
