What UE means on an LG washer

The drum spins very fast, so the washer checks that the laundry is evenly spread before it speeds up. When it isn't, LG washers show an unbalanced load code. On LG top-load washers, LG explains that while uE is showing, the washer adds water, agitates to separate the items, drains and tries to spin again. After three attempts, it switches to UE: it couldn't fix the balance itself.

Common causes (from LG)

• Laundry out of balance: a single bulky item like a pillow or rug, or sheets and blankets tangled together.
• Too little or too much laundry. LG says front-loaders work best loaded to about two-thirds of capacity.
• The washer isn't level, or it slides on a slippery floor.
• Cycles that use less water, which let items clump together.

Safety: wait for the drum to stop and the door or lid to unlock before reaching in. Unplug the washer before tilting it or adjusting the feet.

Safe things to try first

1. Redistribute the load. Untangle and spread the laundry evenly. Add a few items to balance a single heavy piece, or reduce the spin speed for small loads.
2. Use the right cycle. LG suggests a Bulky/Large cycle for comforters, rugs, pillows and blankets. On top-loaders, a cycle that uses more water (LG mentions Perm Press/Casual) helps the load spread out.
3. Level the washer. Loosen the lock nuts on the feet, use a level front to back and side to side, adjust the feet, then tighten the lock nuts. On a top-loader, LG suggests checking that the tub sits centered when you look inside. Don't extend the legs further than needed.
4. Slippery floor? LG recommends non-skid pads if the washer slides during spin.
5. Run the empty test. Run a Rinse and Spin with the drum completely empty. LG says if the code shows up with nothing inside, the washer needs service.

When to call a technician

Call if UE appears during an empty Rinse and Spin, if it shows on almost every normal load after leveling, or if the washer bangs or walks across the floor. Those point to a mechanical problem rather than the load, and that needs a technician.

What's the difference between uE and UE on an LG washer?

On LG top-loaders, a small uE means the washer is trying to rebalance the load by itself. A capital UE means it tried three times without success and needs you to redistribute the load.

Is some shaking at the start of spin normal?
