Samsung Refrigerator 22E, 21E, 40E and 5E Error Codes
These are some of the most common Samsung fridge codes. 22E, 21E and 40E are fan errors: the control isn't sensing that a fan is turning when it should, which Samsung says usually means the fan is frozen in ice. 5E is a fridge defrost sensor error. Some models show a C instead of an E (22C, 21C, 40C).

Before you do anything: Samsung advises that, unless its instructions for a code say otherwise, you shouldn't unplug the fridge or press panel buttons to make a code go away, because that makes it harder for a technician to diagnose. 22E / 22C: fridge fan error
Samsung says the fridge fan error can be caused by running the refrigerator with the door left open too long, which lets frost build up around the fan.
What Samsung says you can try
- Move perishable food to coolers with ice.
- Unplug the refrigerator and leave the doors open for a few hours so the ice can melt. Put towels down for the meltwater.
- Plug it back in, close the doors and resume normal use.
If the error returns, Samsung's next step is service.
21E / 21C: freezer fan error
Samsung explains that this means the electronics aren't sensing rotation from the freezer fan when it's supposed to be turning. It usually means the fan is frozen up, which can happen if the door was left open or there's a gap in the door gasket. It can also be a failed fan motor.
Safe things to check
- Make sure the freezer isn't packed so full that the doors can't close completely.
- Check that the door gaskets touch the cabinet all the way around. Clean them with warm soapy water if they're sticky or dirty.
- Samsung says you can defrost the unit if you wish (the same way as for 22E above); otherwise, request service.
40E / 40C and 5E
Samsung lists 40E / 40C as an ice room fan error and 5E as a fridge defrost sensor error. Samsung doesn't give homeowner steps for these two, so don't try to clear them. Write the code down and call. A defrost sensor problem can lead to frost building up where it shouldn't, and that needs a technician.
When to call a technician
- 22E comes back after the defrost reset.
- 21E returns after defrosting and fixing any door or gasket problem, or you'd rather not defrost.
- You see 40E / 40C, 5E or any code you can't identify.
- The fridge or freezer is getting warm. The FDA recommends 40°F or below in the fridge and 0°F in the freezer.
If ice stopped a fan once, it can happen again, so it's worth having a technician find out why the ice formed.
