GE refrigerators

Warm refrigerator, cold freezer

When the freezer is still cold but the fresh-food side warms up, the usual causes are an evaporator fan that stopped, or frost choking the evaporator because the defrost system failed. On some GE models, an FF code means the freezer temperature is rising. See refrigerator FF codes for what to check.

Ice maker and dispenser problems

No ice, small or hollow cubes, or a weak dispenser usually start with the water side: an old filter, low water pressure, a partly closed valve or a frozen fill line. Hard water scale builds up in inlet valves over time. If the water side checks out, the ice maker itself or the inlet valve may need replacing.

Water on the floor

Water under the crispers or on the floor is often a clogged defrost drain, a cracked water line, or a filter housing that isn't sealing.

GE dishwashers

If a GE dishwasher leaves water in the bottom, check the filter (on models that have a removable one), the drain hose and, on new installs, the disposal knockout plug. Poor cleaning often comes from blocked spray-arm holes or hard-water scale. See dishwasher repair for more.

GE washers and dryers

GE top-loaders that won't spin or drain often have a lid switch, drain pump or clog problem. A GE dryer that tumbles without heat usually points to a restricted vent and a blown thermal fuse, a failed heating element on electric models, or an igniter on gas models. Clear the vent before anything else.

GE ranges and wall ovens

An oven that won't heat or preheats slowly is often a weak bake igniter (gas) or a failed bake element (electric). If the display shows an F-code, note it exactly; GE uses these codes to point at sensors, controls and door locks. Surface burners that click nonstop are often wet or need their caps reseated.

What to check first

1. Check power and settings: breaker, outlet, and that nothing was switched into a demo or lock mode.
2. Clean the obvious filters: refrigerator water filter date, dishwasher filter, dryer lint screen.
3. Look at airflow: refrigerator vents not blocked by food, dryer vent flap opening outside.
4. Write down any code and the model number.

When to call

Call if the refrigerator stays above about 40°F, water leaks, a dryer is cold after the vent is clear, or an oven code keeps coming back.
