Common Viking problems

Gas oven won't heat or heats slowly

Most Viking gas ovens light with a glow-bar (hot surface) igniter. As the igniter ages it draws less current, and below a certain point it can glow without opening the gas safety valve. You see an orange glow, but no flame, or the oven takes much longer to reach temperature. Viking's service documentation tests the igniter's current draw for exactly this reason. It's one of the most common reasons an older gas oven stops baking properly, and it's a repair, not a reason to replace the range.

Burners that click, won't light or burn unevenly

Spills and cleaning water around the igniters can cause continuous clicking, and a cap or burner head that isn't seated properly gives a weak or uneven flame. Once the burner is dry and seated, clicking that won't stop usually means a spark switch or spark module has failed.

Oven door, hinges and gaskets

Heavy pro-style oven doors put a lot of load on their hinges and gaskets. A door that won't close evenly or a gasket that is torn lets heat out, leading to long preheats, uneven baking and hot knobs.

Built-in refrigerator running warm

Like other built-ins, Viking refrigerators need a clean condenser and working fans. Dust at the grille, a failing condenser or evaporator fan, frost on the evaporator from a defrost fault, and worn door gaskets are the usual suspects. Warm spots with the freezer still cold often point to airflow between the sections.

What to check first

1. Watch the oven igniter for a minute or two after you set Bake. Note whether it glows and whether a flame ever appears.
2. Dry and reseat the burners if a surface burner clicks or won't light.
3. Close the oven door slowly and look for gaps along the gasket.
4. Refrigerator: check the condenser grille for dust, the doors for a proper seal, and nothing blocking the air vents inside.

When to call

Call if the oven igniter glows but the burner doesn't light, a burner won't stay lit, you smell gas near the range, or the refrigerator stays above about 40°F after the basic checks. Don't keep resetting an oven that won't ignite; the gas valve and igniter need to be tested properly.
