Common Sub-Zero problems

Warm refrigerator or a unit that runs all the time

A Sub-Zero moves heat out through its condenser, and on many built-in models that condenser sits behind the top grille, where dust and kitchen grease collect out of sight. Sub-Zero's own care guides call for cleaning the condenser regularly, generally every six to twelve months depending on the model, and more often in dusty homes or homes with pets. A clogged condenser makes the compressor run longer and hotter, and in a Texas summer that can be the difference between a cold fridge and a warm one. If the condenser is clean and it's still warm, the cause may be a condenser or evaporator fan, a defrost problem or a control fault, which is where a proper diagnosis comes in.

Ice maker slow or stopped

Low ice production often starts with the water side: an overdue water filter, a partly closed supply valve, a kinked line behind the unit, or a fill tube that has frozen. Sub-Zero's guides generally call for replacing the water filter about once a year, or sooner if the filter indicator comes on or ice production drops. Hard water, which is common across much of Fort Bend County, shortens that interval.

Sweating, condensation or frost

Moisture on the outside of the doors, water droplets inside, or frost on the freezer baskets usually means warm, humid air is getting in. The usual causes are a door that isn't closing fully (an overfilled bin or a shifted shelf), a torn or flattened gasket, or doors that have gone out of alignment. Houston humidity makes small sealing problems show up fast.

New noises

Buzzing, rattling or a fan that ticks as it spins can point to a fan motor on its way out, ice touching a fan blade, or a panel that has worked loose. Clicking every few minutes with no cooling is more serious; see "When to call" below.

What to check first

1. Power and settings. Make sure the unit is on and the set temperatures haven't been changed. After any change, give it several hours to settle.
2. The doors. Check nothing is stopping a door or drawer from closing, and look at the gasket for tears or gaps.
3. The condenser. With the power off, follow your use & care guide to check the condenser behind the grille. If it's matted with dust, cleaning it is often the single best thing you can do.
4. Water and ice. Check the filter date, confirm the ice maker is switched on, and look for a kinked supply line.

When to call

Call if the fresh-food section stays above about 40°F after these checks, the compressor clicks on and off without cooling, the freezer is softening, or water is leaking onto the floor or into the cabinetry. Move food to a cooler rather than waiting it out. If the diagnosis points to the sealed system (the compressor or refrigerant circuit), we'll explain what that means and your options honestly before any work is decided.
